Micro velvet is a 100% polyester velvet that is very hard-wearing and easy to use.  Here are some of the characteristics and benefits of micro velvet:

1. Pile does not crush;
   

2. Can be machine washed (although I have not tried this myself);
   

3. Is light weight and can be draped softly like silk, but is also strong enough to be used without backing for the bodice of an Irish dancing dress;
   

4. Has greater lustre than cotton velvets;
   

5. Has a medium depth pile, so is easier to use than other polyester velvets;
   

6. Is non-stretch;
   

7. Comes in a wide variety of bright colours.
